Stored grain is money in the bank. Farmers protect it from moisture, mold, insects and equipment failures, but connected monitoring systems introduce another risk: someone gaining unauthorized access to the technology used to protect that grain.
Many farms now use digital sensors to monitor grain temperature and moisture. Some systems send alerts to a phone or automatically control aeration fans. These tools are valuable, but an attacker who obtains a password could potentially change alarm settings, manipulate readings, turn fans on or off, or prevent warnings from reaching the farmer. The grain might appear safe on a screen while its condition is deteriorating inside the bin.
An attempted cyberattack against Jordan’s national wheat reserves shows that this is a credible threat.
On March 2, 2026, Jordan’s National Cybersecurity Center announced that it had stopped an intrusion targeting the wheat-silo management system operated by the Jordan Silos and Supply General Company. Jordanian officials traced the attack to Iran and said its apparent objective was to manipulate wheat-storage temperatures and damage the country’s strategic grain reserve.
The center’s director later reported that the attackers entered through a weak password used by one of the company’s system users. They reportedly gained broad access to the network and reached its power system before being stopped. Temperature controls, weighing systems and backup power were among the systems targeted.
Jordanian officials said monitoring teams detected and contained the attack before the silo-management system or stored wheat was affected. Claims made by the attackers about changing temperatures, weights and power settings were not independently verified.
Although Jordan’s silos are much larger than most farm bins, the underlying lesson is the same: stored grain depends on accurate information and dependable equipment. If the monitoring system cannot be trusted, neither can the picture it provides of the grain’s condition.
Farmers should use digital monitoring as a supplement to physical inspection. Compare electronic readings with independent temperature and moisture measurements, confirm that fans actually operate when commanded, and inspect grain for heating, crusting, insects, mold or unusual odors. Maintain a manual way to operate essential equipment if the automated system or internet connection fails.
Change every default password installed by an equipment vendor. Use a unique password for each grain-monitoring account, enable multifactor authentication when available, and regularly review who—including employees, contractors and vendors—has remote access.
