Update Your Software
Technology is constantly changing and evolving. In order to keep everything in tip top shape, companies will occasionally release patches and updates to fix security issues and make improvements. Just like equipment needs to be maintained, so does the software.
Take Inventory of What You Have
Before you can keep your software up to date, you need a clear picture of what's running on your operation. For you, that may include, but is not limited to:
- Computers and laptops used for farm management or administrative work
- Smartphones and tablets
- Routers and networking equipment
- Connected devices like smart irrigation controllers, GPS systems, environmental sensors, security cameras
- Farm management, accounting, or precision agriculture applications
A simple written list or a basic spreadsheet is enough. The goal is to make sure nothing gets overlooked because it was forgotten.
Check the Current Status
For each item on your list, two things are worth knowing.
What version is it running? This is usually found in the device's settings or in the "About" section of an application. Knowing the current version is what lets you compare against available updates.
Is it still supported? Every piece of software and hardware has a lifespan. When a manufacturer stops releasing updates for a product, it's considered end of life — any vulnerability discovered after that point will never be patched. Running end-of-life software carries real risk, and if something on your list is no longer supported, it's worth planning a replacement rather than continuing to rely on it.
Turn On Automatic Updates
Most devices and operating systems can download and install updates automatically, and for everyday devices this is the most practical way to stay current without having to remember to check manually.
The exact steps vary depending on what device you're using and what version of the software it's running, so the most reliable approach is to search directly for your device. Searching something like "how to turn on automatic updates on [your device or operating system]" will typically surface official guidance from the manufacturer. Their support pages are the best place to start since the instructions there will reflect what you're actually looking at.
For specialized software or offline equipment where automatic updates aren't an option, the same approach applies; check the manufacturer's website or reach out to your vendor for guidance specific to that equipment.
What Are The Requirements
Some updates need more than just a few minutes. Some updates require a lot of storage space. Depending on the update or the device, your requirements could change. In general, check the following before running a major update:
Storage space. Large updates need room to download and install. If a device is nearly full, you may need to free up space first.
A network connection. Larger updates involve significant data downloads. If you're on a limited data plan or a slow rural connection, it may be worth scheduling updates when you have access to better connectivity or running them during off-peak hours.
Time. Some updates install in minutes; others take considerably longer. Starting an update right before you need to use a device isn't ideal. Plan accordingly by including some time in your morning routine to check if your critical devices are up-to-date.
Different Ways To Update
Over the internet is the most common method. The device connects to the manufacturer's servers and pulls the update down directly. Most computers, smartphones, and modern equipment use this approach.
From a website download. Some software requires you to visit the manufacturer's website, download an update file, and install it manually. This is common for specialized applications and certain farm management platforms.
Via USB or physical media. For equipment that isn't connected to the internet — or in situations with unreliable connectivity — some manufacturers distribute updates on USB drives or SD cards. Your equipment dealer may be able to provide these, or you can download the update file on a connected device and transfer it manually.
What's a driver, and where do you find one? A driver is a small piece of software that allows your computer to communicate with a specific piece of hardware — a printer, a GPS receiver, a camera. Drivers sometimes need to be updated separately from the main operating system. If a piece of hardware stops working correctly after a system update, checking the manufacturer's website for an updated driver is usually the right place to start.

Why Does Updating Matter?
The most important reason is security. When a fix is released, the vulnerability it addresses often becomes more widely known at the same time. Attackers look for systems that haven't applied the patch yet, so the window between when an update comes out and when you install it is a window of exposure.
A good example of this is ransomware, which is a type of attack where someone gains access to your systems and locks you out of your own files until you pay to get them back. Many of the largest ransomware outbreaks in recent years, including ones that hit farms and food supply operations, spread almost entirely through systems running outdated software. The fix was already available. The affected systems just hadn't applied it yet.
Another common scenario involves connected devices like routers or cameras that haven't been updated in years. Attackers actively scan for older, unpatched devices because the vulnerabilities in them are well-documented. An outdated router on your operation isn't just a slow internet problem — it can be an entry point into everything else on your network.
Beyond security, updates frequently improve performance and fix bugs, so staying current generally means your software runs more reliably too.
How Updating Works Differently Depending on the Device
Connected devices — computers, phones, tablets — can usually update automatically over the internet. For most of your day-to-day technology, turning on automatic updates largely handles this.
Equipment that operates offline or on isolated networks is a different situation. Precision ag tools, sensors, and embedded controllers may not connect to the internet at all, or may only connect periodically. Updates for these devices often need to be applied manually, either by you or by a technician, and through a physical method like a USB drive.
When an offline device reconnects to a network, it may attempt to download pending updates at that point. For equipment that's critical to active operations, it's worth being aware of this and planning reconnections for a time when an unexpected update or restart wouldn't disrupt your work.
Some precision agriculture tools require an active subscription or service agreement to receive ongoing updates. If that applies to equipment you rely on, keeping that agreement current is part of keeping it secure and functional.
Organizing and Scheduling Your Updates
Rather than waiting until something breaks or a notification becomes impossible to ignore, a simple routine makes this easier to keep up with.
Once a month, spend a few minutes checking that your key devices are running current software. Add a check to your routine after any major equipment purchase or when you bring a new device online. Keep a note of anything approaching end of life so you have time to plan a replacement rather than being caught off guard.
If updates require taking a system offline and you use it regularly, schedule them during slower periods — between seasons, over winter, or during a planned maintenance window. It doesn't need to be a significant undertaking. A brief, consistent habit covers most of it.
